La Granja de San Ildefonso. Royal Palace and Gardens

La Granja of San Ildefonso is placed only 13 km away of Segovia. There you can find a Royal palace and its beautiful gardens and fountains.

The royal palace was ordered to be built in the XVIIIth century by Felipe V, the first Borbón of Spain. The first intention of the king was to built a residence without luxuries, to rest and to hunt.

Later, Felipe V and his second wife Elizabeth from Farnese embellished and enlarged the palace. The king moved back to this place in 1724 and during twenty following years he made the gardens and the palace bigger.

The palace was used like summer residence by all its successors up Alfonso XIII period.

The gardens are some of the best examples that today survive from the gardens of the XVIIIth century. It raised its construction in accordance with the French tastes.

The fountains are known especially by its water playing, which compose with its fountains and statues wonderful and amazing spectacles. From all the fountains stand out the Fame,  or the baroque one of the Baths of Diana, that of Latona, with its thinnest fountains, the magnificent Horse racing, or the impressive Cascade opposite to the palace front.

The water play of thsi fountains can be seen in spring, from Holy Week.
